Refuge Victoria welcomes new CEO

The Board of Refuge Victoria is pleased to announce the appointment of Janet Jukes OAM to the position of Chief Executive Officer of Refuge Victoria.

Janet brings to the position considerable experience in the human services sector, including work in child, youth and family services, relationship and counselling services, homelessness, family violence, community legal sectors, AIDS Councils and universities.

Most recently, Janet held the position of CEO of Relationship Matters Counselling and Mediation.

Janet comes to the role as a highly respected community activist, with extensive networks in the lesbian, gay, and transgender communities.

Janet has significant governance experience in the not-for-profit sectors. In 2021, she was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (General Division) – for services to the community through LGBTIQ advocacy and social welfare organisations.

A recurrent theme in Janet’s professional and voluntary work is a desire to see an improvement in the human dignity of those who are made vulnerable within our communities.

“We are thrilled to announce the appointment of such an accomplished, respected professional to the role of CEO at Refuge Victoria,” said Refuge Victoria Chair Emily Ryder.

“Throughout the robust recruitment process, Janet stood out for her sector experience, leadership skills and the strong alignment with her personal values and those of Refuge Victoria.

“Janet is perfectly placed to advance Refuge Victoria’s strategic plan and build on the exceptional work of staff across the organisation.

“The Board and staff of Refuge Victoria look forward to Janet commencing in the CEO role on 18 July. On their behalf, I would also like to thank and recognise the work of former CEO Paula Piccinini and Interim CEO Ellen Matusko.”
